Note that this list is still incomplete, it's still missing a few Seihou game, LNB, and many shot type rankings. I'm undecided on whether or not to include LNNs and ExNNs due to them being inherently luck dependent. Fangames might also be added at some point but I'm not sure of that either. It's also entirely possible that these rankings will change at some point.

I've been working on a list of how hard each Touhou game is, inspired by the Japanese STG Wiki difficulty list (http://www.wikihouse.com/stg/index.php?STG%A5%E9%A5%F3%A5%AF%B0%EC%CD%F7) (English translation (https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?p=1157621)) that ranks arcade shmup difficulty. The list works on a scale of 0-50, with higher numbers being harder. I tried to make this list equivalent to the Japanese STG Wiki one, so for example a 20 on that list would be about the same as a 20 on this list. Games with no number are equal to the number of the game above.

thats interesting, so SA normal reimuA is about as hard as soew extra and nothing gets easier than easy IN border team
i cant even play lunatic yet, but why is reimuB lunatic no bomb in mof so hard?
and looks like my highest rated achievement is ddc normal sakuyaA at a 10 (technically i did normal sa reimuA but i used a patch that seems to slightly boost power soo doesnt count)

That's an interesting looking list, to say the least. ~~pun not intended~~

Basing on it's current state, it seems my best achievement so far is SA Reimu A Lunatic 1cc. Good enough, I suppose.

Although, will there be any mentions of No Focus achievements or are these not worth for consideration? :eyes:

If I were to go off of my "greatest" achievement, that being a Lunatic 1cc of HSiFS with Reimu-Autumn, that would rank me at #19, correct? It feels so wrong because Reimu and Autumn made the game a hilarious releasefest that I somehow powered through with next to no actual dodging skill to back it up. It would also imply I could do things like UFO Hard, to which I say nay sire, I can't!

A more serious ranking based on my most serious greatest achievement would rank me at #11 for clearing IN Hard with the Border Team.

I greatly disagree with DDC Normal being rated the same as LLK Normal.

DDC Normal I have managed to *almost* 1CC, getting all the way to the final spellcard.

LLC Normal I can't even 1CC Stage 3. There feels like there is a vast difficulty gulf between these two. Also if I recall ZUN said in part he made LLK hard specifically in comparison to DDC and TD feedback about being too easy.

Likewise PCB being as low as it is surprises me, because it's also one of the games I haven't 1CC'ed on Normal. [DDC; LLC; PCB; SA and UFO being these games; while I have 1CC'ed EoSD; IN; MoF and 10D.]

I mean; if I were to rank the Windows Era games [Barring PofV] from easiest to hardest:

MoF - My easiest 1CC; didn't take too long to acheive

IN - Only game I've 1CC'ed with 2 shottypes; Scarlet and Magic. Ironically despite Border being listed here I haven't beaten it with Border because I personally find the Marisa fight far harder than the Reimu fight. Marisa kicks my butt six ways; Reimu I can do death/bombless.

10D - It took a fair bit of effort for me to do this, but not too much. 10D Extra is my best Extra stage, I can *almost* beat it.

EoSD: This took a lot of attempts to do, and is my most recent 1CC

DDC - I can get to Sukana's final spellcard. Very close to the 1CC here

PCB - I can make it about halfway through Yuyuko.

SA - I've made it to Utusho once. I've also 1CC'ed Easy, the only game I've done Easy 1CC on.

UFO - I can hardly make Stage 5

LLK - I can't even 1CC Stage 3.

HHiFK and WBWC I haven't actually played so can't rank.

Love this list! Ever since I saw the one for arcade shmups, I've always wondered how the Touhou games would rank on a similar scale.

I'm pretty new to playing shmups and I've only played LLS so far. It's interesting how each difficulty is just +4 from the last. It took me a few weeks to move from Easy to Normal, and at least two months from Normal to Hard. Just started doing Lunatic at the start of this month, but Lunatic is a completely different game. And even then it's still the easiest Lunatic at just 14... With the randomly fired aimed shots, I would expect LLS Lunatic to rank a little higher. It's gonna take me at least four months to scrape together a 1cc at my pace >.<

So the hardest Lunatic clear with no additional restrictions is DDC with Marisa A or Sakuya B at 27. I thought LoLK would surely rank the highest, or if not that, then SA or UFO since they have a reputation for being difficult Touhou shmups too. Well, using the easiest shot type for each game, UFO becomes the toughest to clear at 23. That's equivalent to Futari Maniac and DFK Omote 2-ALL, huh.

It seems like getting a Lunatic 1cc in each Touhou shmup is a nice way to progress from total noob to being able to handle the arcade stuff.

I'm curious how LNNs and ExNNs will be ranked, even if they are super luck-based. Just for fun, like how an Inbachi clear is pretty much a 50 lol.

Here is some not-too-scientific analysis of the rankings in the list.

Average ranking is calculated from the rankings below (relative to each other). Average difficulty is calculated from the rankings in the original list. Some games are missing an entry for a difficulty in the list, so I did not calculate their average difficulty since it'll be inaccurate anyway. Those missing an Extra stage (HRtP and PoDD), and those missing entries (HSiFS, TD, EoSD) have their totals divided by 4 instead of 5 to find their average values. Phantasm isn't included since it is a one-off thing.

Difficulty is often subjective. I'd advise not placing too much analysis in this, as if they were absolute rankings.

I'm sure it can be a nice general list, but different skill sets matter-- some people are better at pure dodging, some at learning tricks to patterns, some at resource management/optimizing the number of lives gained, and so on.

Also, if specifically aiming for 1ccs and not for more advanced survival goals, some games are much more exploitable than others. For example, I see HRtP Lunatic ranked with many other games' Lunatic 1ccs, when you can use the slide left, bomb, slide left trick to trivialize nearly all stages (dying for bombs as needed), build up 6 lives for each boss, and repeatedly slide the orb into them without worrying about your lives. I forgot when I got its Lunatic 1cc, but I wouldn't rank it harder than an average Windows Extra clear, personally, in terms of learning the tricks to 1cc while barely dodging anything.

Might be fun to make more personal rankings then see what they average to, though. From what I recall of my Lunatic 1ccs in 2012 (so DDC onward aren't listed), I'd rank Lunatic 1cc difficulty in this order, highest to lowest, with ">" symbolizing a larger gap:
PoDD > UFO, EoSD, SA, MoF (no MarisaB)/PCB/IN/MS, GFW, TD > LLS >> HRtP

I forgot where to rank SoEW, but its Lunatic bosses are identical to Hard (the only differences are stage portion revenge bullets and a higher score multiplier), so it's probably not that high. PoFV isn't listed since I never had a Lunatic 1cc of it, aside from a quick Aya run. I do actually have a Lunatic 1cc of DDC, but it was a first-try run on stream after hundreds of hours of scoring, that 1cced purely due to knowing the stage portions well enough to gain ~20 lives; I can't rank the difficulty of such a run.

Made some changes

MoF LNB: 30 -> 28
SA Lunatic: 22 -> 21

Also added a rating for EoSD Lunatic (21) and HSiFS Hard (13) because I apparently forgot about those the first time.

Thanks for taking the time to make this ZPS! This is a nice resource, especially since you've made it comparable to the arcade rankings. Hopefully this will be useful to those picking arcade games to try.

Going by your table, my highest achievement is MoF ExNB (15). But that is definitely rated too high; I'd put it at about 12.

Seems like my current highest is Marisa LoLK Lunatic mode for 24 points. I'm trying to do a Lunatic No Bomb run in LoLK but Junko's final attack is... troublesome to put it mildly.

Actually looks at the real shmups list, looks at my best achievements there and cross references looks good, can't comment on the supper hard stuff though.
No question of the real top places though DDPDOJ WL was the game where I remember failing to 1-cc to the first boss.
Nastiest touhou comparing to *%£!ing Raizing (the obtuse, hard to see bullets, secret ridden bastards) games seems fair.
